FILM FORRES HISTORY

Ten years and counting…

Film Forres began in 2011 when local worker, Margaret Cowie, gathered volunteers together around the idea of showing films to young people. This was against a background of the lack of facilities for under-18s in Forres. The newly established Film Forres committee's funding efforts raised £40,000 to buy cinema seats, projection equipment and a full-size screen.

In 2018 Margaret Cowie stepped down as chair of Film Forres. This led to several new members joining the group to consider its future. As a result, Film Forres began to look for ways to revitalise its offering to Forres and its wider community.

From 2018 on, we decided to expand beyond our screenings for under-18s - Film Forres Family and began monthly shows for over 18s - Film Forres Presents!

Like many community organisations in 2019 and 2020, screenings were suspended because of Covid 19. During that time we started our new initiative, Film School Forres. We'd received funding from Creative Scotland to run community workshops on understanding the medium of film but, since Covid was affecting face-to-face work, we we were allowed to run them online using Zoom in early 2021. Since then we have run several more face-to-face workshops for young people and for school staff. More are planned for later in 2024.

Following the Covid years, Film Forres also found funding to take screenings out and about to community groups in the Forres area - this became Film Forres Mobile. Local venues and groups can now take advantage of our full-equipped mobile facilities. If you're interested, please ask! There's more information here.
